CAF seeks new hosts after WAFCON disappointment
The Confederation of African Football is exploring alternative hosts for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations due to Morocco's potential inability to meet hosting requirements.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is re-evaluating its plans for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations following the tournament's postponement. Originally set to take place from March 17 to April 3, the event has now been rescheduled to July 25 to August 16 due to ongoing concerns about Morocco's capacity to host. While the new dates have been announced, there is increasing uncertainty over whether Morocco can fulfill its hosting obligations amidst logistical challenges and scheduling conflicts with other football events.
Reports indicate that Moroccan authorities had previously communicated internally to CAF that they faced difficulties in hosting the tournament within the originally planned timeframe. This internal notification came weeks before CAF made the public announcement regarding the postponement. As a result, CAF is proactively exploring other potential host nations to ensure the success of the tournament, which is crucial for women’s football on the continent.
The situation has raised questions not only about Morocco’s readiness but also about the overall organization of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations as it pertains to future events. With the emphasis on boosting women's football, securing a reliable host will be pivotal for the tournament’s credibility and success, thereby reinforcing the need for CAF to act swiftly in solidifying alternative arrangements if necessary.
