Court remands siblings over alleged N35m theft
Two siblings have been remanded in a correctional facility for allegedly stealing items valued at N35 million from their elder brother.
In a case heard at the Lagos State Special Offences Court, Justice Mojisola Dada has ordered the remand of siblings Abubakar Aliyu and Abdullahi Aliyu in a correctional facility due to their involvement in a theft case concerning goods worth N35 million that belonged to their elder brother. The arraignment took place on Wednesday, and the two were charged with conspiracy, conversion, stealing, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, emphasizing the seriousness of the offenses they are accused of.
During the proceedings, prosecution counsel SP Umar Bello indicated that they were ready for the arraignment and sought the court's permission to allow the defendants to enter their plea. The charges against the Aliyu siblings date back to a 2020 incident at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, which adds a layer of complexity to the case considering the location and the nature of the alleged crime. This suggests that the case might involve not just family disputes but potentially broader implications regarding theft and conduct at a national transport hub.
The involvement of both police and court officials highlights the legal gravity of the matter, as well as the complexities surrounding family disputes that can escalate into legal controversies. This case may set a precedent for how similar cases are handled in Nigeria, particularly concerning theft within families and the legal thresholds for conduct deemed likely to cause disturbances.
