“School Bags Stained with Blood, Global Educators Outraged”
Following the bombing of an elementary school in Iran that killed at least 165 students and staff, South Korean educators denounced the attack as a war crime.
A bombing incident at an elementary school in Shiraz, Iran, on September 28, which was part of a broader military operation involving the US and Israel, has drawn widespread condemnation from educators in South Korea. The heartfelt outcry includes a statement from the Korean Federation of Teachers' Associations, which expressed profound shock and anger at the imagery of school bags stained with blood alongside the lifeless bodies of children and educators. They described the strike, which resulted in numerous fatalities among children under twelve, as a heinous act, reinforcing the idea that attacks targeting classrooms violate fundamental humanitarian principles.
In its statement, the Korean Federation reminded the international community that military engagements cannot justify the targeting of civilian locations, including schools and hospitals, and invoked the Geneva Conventions, which strictly prohibit attacks against such civilian facilities. The organization emphasized that the existence of military objectives nearby does not absolve aggressors of their obligation to minimize civilian casualties, underscoring the tragedy of using children as pawns in geopolitical conflicts. They argued that the mere classification of civilian casualties as 'collateral damage' is a cold and inhumane rationale that fails to acknowledge the human cost of war.
In addition to the teachers' federation, another group of educators also expressed their grief, lamenting the transformation of classrooms, once places of learning and joy, into ruins of violence. Their statements collectively stress that no security argument can justify sacrificing the lives of children, reinforcing the need for accountability and immediate cessation of violence against civilians. Their call to action extends to both the South Korean government and the international community to denounce such acts and ensure the protection of innocent lives amid military conflicts.
