Emma on harassment at the recycling center: 'I've been called a slut'
Emma Silvander, a waste coordinator in Sorsele, Sweden, faces verbal abuse at work and urges the public to treat recycling center staff with respect.
Emma Silvander, a 30-year-old waste coordinator at the recycling center in Sorsele, Sweden, has been experiencing verbal harassment from some visitors during her two years in the position. Despite enjoying her job, she sometimes encounters hostility, as illustrated by a recent incident where a visitor called her a 'slut' after being corrected for sorting waste improperly. Silvander highlights that while the majority of the visitors are pleasant, a small fraction contributes to a challenging work environment.
A survey conducted by Avfall Sverige in 2023 revealed alarming statistics, indicating that 41% of recycling facilities across 120 municipalities have reported instances of staff being subjected to threats or violence. Often, these altercations arise from stressed customers who react poorly when corrected by staff for mistakes in waste sorting. Emma mentions that while physical confrontations have occurred, they are rare, but the emotional toll of verbal insults is significant.
In response to the growing concerns over staff safety, the Sorsele Municipality has addressed the issue publicly by urging visitors to be considerate in their interactions with personnel at the recycling center. The technical manager described the incidents as 'terrible', emphasizing the need for respectful communication. Emma and her colleagues continue to foster a positive atmosphere while seeking better treatment in their work environment.
