Protected Space: When the Swimming Pool is Open Only for Women

More swimming pools are offering special times for women and girls, as one town in Hochtaunuskreis considers introducing this practice following a successful model from a nearby facility.

In Germany, swimming pools are increasingly introducing designated hours exclusively for women and girls, referred to as 'Frauenschwimmen.' The Taunabad in Oberursel has successfully implemented this concept for eleven years, allowing female visitors to swim without male presence. Meanwhile, the city of Usingen is currently assessing the interest among its female population in establishing similar times at the Taunusbad. This initiative intends to create a comfortable environment for women who may feel more at ease swimming among their peers.

The city's efforts involve conducting a survey among the 15,900 female residents to gauge demand for women-only swim times. The survey began just last week and is expected to continue for several months, indicating a methodical approach to understanding community opinions and preferences. Nadine Fork, the municipal women's representative, emphasized the importance of gathering data first before approaching the county, which operates the pool, to advocate for the new swim hours.

This initiative is not merely about promoting physical health; it also aims to foster a supportive community space for women. It acknowledges cultural sensitivities that may affect women’s participation in public swimming spaces. The outcome of the survey could significantly influence the future of women-oriented recreational programs in Usingen, potentially providing a model for other towns considering similar offerings.
