Oberschleißheim Swimming Pool: Municipalities Must Pay for Swimming Instruction

The impending closure of the Oberschleißheim indoor swimming pool has been averted thanks to a significant donation, but neighboring municipalities are now being asked to contribute financially for swimming lessons.

The Oberschleißheim indoor swimming pool was facing closure until a generous donation of half a million euros from entrepreneur couple Schreiner secured its operation for another year. However, to ensure the long-term sustainability of the pool, there is a pressing need to reduce its ongoing deficit. Neighboring municipalities that send school children for swimming lessons are now involved in discussions about financial contributions towards the operational costs of the facility.

The municipal council proposed that the neighboring towns of Garching, Haimhausen, and Karlsfeld each pay a fee of 10,000 euros. This payment is aimed at covering the so-called 'holding costs', which include expenses for personnel, energy, operations, and maintenance. Each municipality's contribution will be required on an annual basis and must be paid in advance, highlighting the importance of communal support for the pool's continued operation.

Mayor Markus Böck (CSU) reported in the town council meeting that initial discussions with neighboring municipalities have yielded positive feedback regarding this financial participation. This collaboration indicates a collective effort to keep the facility open, serving not only Oberschleißheim residents but also those from surrounding areas, thus underscoring the importance of the swimming pool as a community resource for children’s education in swimming.
