‘If you give me one rice cake, I won’t eat you’ Lee Eok-bae’s ‘Brother and Sister Story’ wins Special Award at Bologna Ragazzi Award

Lee Eok-bae's picture book 'Brother and Sister Story,' based on the traditional Korean tale, has won a Special Award at the Bologna Children's Book Fair.

At the 63rd Bologna Children's Book Fair, Lee Eok-bae's picture book 'Brother and Sister Story' was awarded the Special Prize of the Bologna Ragazzi Award, which celebrates children's literature around the world. This work elegantly reinterprets the traditional Korean folktale 'The Sun and the Moon,' showcasing Lee's unique artistic style that resonates with Korea's folk painting tradition. The award recognizes Lee's contribution as a pioneer in Korean picture book illustration, emphasizing the significance of this accolade for both the artist and Korean literature.

The publisher, Sigejeol, announced that 'Brother and Sister Story' is rooted in a tale known to all Koreans, capturing the essence of folklore while incorporating elements of modernity. The illustrations reflect humorous depictions of the Korean tiger, famously known from 'K-pop Demon Hunters,' along with nostalgic scenery reminiscent of ancient folk paintings. Contrary to previous versions where the tiger represented a menacing figure, Lee's rendition focuses on the clever banter between the siblings and emphasizes their resilience and humanity, even amid perilous situations.

The Ragazzi Award, presented annually at the Bologna International Children’s Book Fair, is a prestigious recognition in the field of children's publishing. This year, the special award categories highlighted fables and old stories, providing a platform for diverse storytelling approaches. Lee Eok-bae has been acknowledged for his ability to blend Korean aesthetics and humor into contemporary picture books, solidifying his role in defining the identity of Korean illustrated literature.
