We Are Ready to Talk About Complex Historical Themes. The Show 'Choice No. 1' Has Managed to Break Through the Noise of Entertainment
A new Latvian TV show, 'Choice No. 1,' aims to foster discussions about complex historical topics, born out of the contemplative atmosphere during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The show 'Choice No. 1' was conceived by editor Iveta Lepeško during the Covid-19 pandemic when life slowed down and allowed for deeper reflection. The challenging social context of the pandemic fostered an environment where complex issues could be approached thoughtfully rather than in the usual frenetic manner. Lepeško recalls that in this quieter period, the idea developed with like-minded collaborators, leading to a team that transformed their thoughts into a viable television project.
Before its launch, director Agita Cāne-Ķīle expressed concerns about whether audiences would be engaged in discussions on difficult subjects, a notable deviation from typical entertainment formats. The production team undertook extensive research, including editor Zane Ozoliņa's discovery of her grandfather's passport while investigating Lieutenant Colonel Vilis Janums and legionnaires. This personal connection adds a layer of historical depth to the project and emphasizes its intention to be both informative and reflective.
The show symbolizes an approach to discussing history that contrasts sharply with modern media's often sensationalized narratives. By focusing on meaningful dialogues around Latvia's past, the program respects the legacy of the country’s first president, Jānis Čakste, promoting thoughtful discourse over sensational commentary. 'Choice No. 1' aims not only to inform but also to encourage viewers to engage with complex historical narratives in a more nuanced manner, potentially influencing how history is discussed in Latvian media.
