Alligator 'Celso' leaves lake to chase police vehicle in Cuiabá park; VIDEO
An alligator named 'Celso' was seen chasing a police vehicle at Parque das Águas in Cuiabá, marking the second time this year he has exhibited this behavior.
An adult alligator, known as 'Celso', has been spotted chasing a police vehicle at Parque das Águas in Cuiabá, Brazil. This incident occurred on Thursday when the police were conducting a patrol in the park, and upon seeing the flashing lights of the police car, the alligator left the lake to follow it. According to Lieutenant Colonel Marion Metello, the commanding officer of the police unit involved, they had to maneuver the vehicle away to redirect the alligator back to the water.
The alligator's behavior has garnered local attention, as this is not an isolated incident; it's the second time this year that 'Celso' has been filmed chasing a police vehicle when the lights are turned on. The alligator is well-known in the area for residing in the lake within the park for several years. Such interactions between wildlife and urban environments raise questions about animal behavior and public safety.
Biodiversity experts, like Professor Romildo Gonçalves from the Federal University of Mato Grosso, suggest relocating the animal to a more natural habitat, emphasizing the importance of ensuring both wildlife safety and the safety of park visitors. This incident showcases the ongoing relationship between wildlife and urbanization, highlighting the need for management strategies that protect native species while maintaining public safety.
