Celec started 15-day preventive maintenance work at the Esmeraldas I thermal power plant

Celec has announced a 15-day preventive maintenance period for the Esmeraldas I thermal power plant, coordinated with Cenace to ensure energy demand is met.

Starting March 5, the Esmeraldas I thermal power plant entered a 15-day preventive maintenance phase as reported by Ecuador's Electric Corporation (Celec). This maintenance is part of Celec's routine operations, which include two maintenance periods each year to ensure that the facility continues to operate efficiently. The timing of this preventive maintenance has been carefully planned in coordination with the National Electricity Operator (Cenace) to ensure that alternative sources, such as Manduriacu and the Toachi Pilatón Hydroelectric Complex, can adequately meet the energy demands during this period.

The 43-year-old thermal power plant will undergo critical technical tasks that cannot be performed while it is fully operational. During the maintenance window, Celec aims to carry out essential repairs and fortifications, including the washing and correction of leaks in the boiler system where steam is generated. These preventive steps are vital for maintaining the performance and reliability of the power plant, which plays a significant role in supplying electricity to the region.

Celec typically schedules maintenance twice a year, with each session serving as an opportunity to enhance operational safety and efficiency. The current maintenance is expected to conclude in the third week of March and is crucial for ensuring that the facility remains capable of supporting the energy needs of Ecuador effectively, especially as the country continues to rely on diverse sources of electricity in a bid for energy security and sustainability.
