The city of Bauru has started a pilot project to enhance traffic safety by implementing traffic calming measures at a known accident-prone intersection.
The City Hall of Bauru, São Paulo, has recently launched a pilot initiative called the 'Calm Street,' aimed at reducing vehicular speeds and enhancing road safety in urban areas. This project was introduced at the intersection of Silva Jardim and Padre Anchieta streets in the Bela Vista neighborhood, which has been notorious for a high frequency of accidents. The city’s move represents an effort to create a safer environment for both pedestrians and drivers, in line with international traffic calming strategies.
The 'Calm Street' system incorporates various physical roadway alterations, such as lane narrowing and the reorganization of road space to naturally reduce vehicle speed. This initiative is supported by the Municipal Company for Urban and Rural Development (Emdurb), which has set a target to decrease accidents at the location by at least 30%. Monitoring will be conducted by city officials to assess changes in driving speed and accident rates following the implementation of the new system.
