B.C. teachers ratify new four-year agreement for 12% wage boost
British Columbia teachers have ratified a new four-year agreement that includes a 12% wage increase and commitments to improve classroom conditions and support services.
The B.C. Teachersβ Federation announced that its members have overwhelmingly ratified a new four-year collective agreement, impacting 52,000 educators across the province. With a striking 91% of votes in favor, the new deal guarantees a 12% wage increase, spread evenly at 3% each year for the next four years. This wage boost comes after extensive negotiations aimed at addressing the needs and priorities of teachers in British Columbia.
In addition to the wage increase, the agreement establishes crucial provisions for enhancing educational support in schools. BCTF president Carole Gordon highlighted that the contract will lead to an increase in the number of counsellors and specialized teachers, aimed at addressing mental health needs and learning challenges. The agreement further includes commitments to improving classroom environments and ensures that teachers receive adequate preparation time, which is vital for effective teaching practices.
This new contract demonstrates a significant step forward in recognizing the hard work of educators in British Columbia while also addressing pressing needs within the educational system. The inclusion of specific provisions for teachers in rural and remote areas, as well as for those involved with Indigenous language teaching, shows a holistic approach to education that aims to improve not only working conditions but also the quality of education delivered to students across the province.
