MC proposes electoral reform with mandatory voting from 16 years old and disappearance of OPLEs
Movimiento Ciudadano (MC) has proposed an electoral reform initiative to lower the voting age to 16 and disband local electoral bodies in Mexico.
Movimiento Ciudadano (MC), a political party in Mexico, has introduced an electoral reform initiative aimed at lowering the voting age to 16 years. The proposed changes come with notable stipulations, including punishments for failing to vote and the elimination of the Local Public Electoral Bodies (OPLEs) and local electoral courts. This reform seeks to modernize the electoral process and engage younger voters in the political arena, reflecting a shift towards inclusivity.
In a press conference where he was joined by members of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, Jorge Álvarez Máynez, the national leader of MC, elaborated on the specific provisions of the initiative. Among them is a proposal to reduce political party financing by 10 percent, distributing funds more equitably among parties. The initiative also calls for voiding elections in cases where a candidate is murdered, addressing serious concerns about political violence in Mexico.
The initiative suggests significant amendments to various legal frameworks, including constitutional articles and laws governing electoral institutions and procedures. By submitting this comprehensive reform package to the Chair of the Chamber of Deputies, Kenia López Rabadán, MC aims to provoke a national conversation about electoral integrity and the safety of candidates, while also encouraging active participation from younger citizens in the democratic process.
