In this context, a new method known as 'water cremation' or alkaline hydrolysis is emerging as a sustainable alternative to conventional cremation. This process differs significantly from standard cremation, which relies on fire; instead, it utilizes hot water and a chemical solution to accelerate the natural decomposition of the body. Recently, this technique was legalized in Scotland, marking it as the first region in the United Kingdom to officially permit this practice.

The water cremation process involves placing the deceased in a pressurized steel chamber, typically wrapped in a biodegradable shroud. Inside this chamber, a mixture predominantly composed of water and a small amount of an alkaline substance, such as potassium hydroxide, is introduced. The intense heat combined with the pressure of the water facilitates the breakdown of the body in a manner that is more environmentally friendly than traditional methods.
