The Biathlon World Cup has resumed: Latvia's highest finish by Buliņa; sisters Ēberg celebrate a double victory
Sweden's Elvira Eberg claimed victory in the women’s individual race at the Biathlon World Cup, with her sister Hanna taking silver and Latvian athlete Buliņa finishing nearly six minutes behind.
The Biathlon World Cup has seen a thrilling start with Sweden's Elvira Eberg winning the women’s individual distance event, marking her as the only competitor to finish without any shooting penalties, with a time of 41 minutes and 46.4 seconds. Her sister Hanna Eberg secured the silver medal, narrowly beating Slovakia's Paulina Batovska-Fialková by just under four seconds, while Latvia's standout Buliņa finished in a disappointing position after struggling with her shooting accuracy.
Latvian competitor Baiba Bendika had a particularly difficult race, hitting only 14 out of 20 targets and incurring an additional six penalty minutes, which led her to a 77th place finish. Her performance was significantly behind that of Elvira Eberg, and also behind her national teammate Annija Keita Sabule, who finished 83rd after a time penalty of nearly nine minutes. In contrast, Lithuania’s Judita Traubaite achieved her career best, placing 15th with perfect shooting, showcasing the competitive edge present in this event.
The event not only highlighted the skill of the Eberg sisters but also emphasized the challenges faced by other competitors. Despite incurring penalties, French athlete Lou Jeanmonnot managed to secure 35th place, preserving her chances in the season standings by maintaining her lead in the Small Crystal Globe. This combination of successes and challenges among the biathletes signals an exciting season ahead in the World Cup circuit, especially for the athletes representing Latvia and its neighbors.
