Children left at traffic signals in auto; gang exploiting them for begging uncovered in Ganjam

In Ganjam, Odisha, police arrested five individuals for allegedly forcing children into begging, rescuing nine minors in the process.

In a significant operation in Brahmapur, Ganjam district of Odisha, police apprehended five individuals—including four women—who were allegedly involved in exploiting minors for begging activities. Among the rescued victims were nine minors, including three girls whose ages ranged from four months to twelve years. The arrested suspects have been identified as Mani Sindhe (65), Ajaya Kajari Sindhe (30), Rani Sindhe (30), Pooja Power (20), and Sita Power (40), all believed to be residents of the Gosani Nuagaon police jurisdiction, near the Brahmapur railway station. The police are in the process of verifying their identities and other details.

The police action followed a tip-off regarding a group engaging in forced begging using children. An investigation was launched that involved collaboration between the police, the district Child Protection Unit, and members of the District Child Welfare Committee (CWC). They began monitoring and investigating the situation as of Tuesday, aiming to ensure the safety and rescue of the minors who were reportedly often left stranded at traffic signals in auto rickshaws and coerced into begging by the suspects. This case shines a light on the pressing issue of child exploitation and trafficking that some regions of India face.

The revelation of this gang and the rescue of the children also raises concerns about the safety of minors in public spaces. With the involvement of local law enforcement and child welfare agencies, this incident underscores the need for greater vigilance and protective measures for vulnerable populations like children against similar forms of exploitation. It serves as a reminder of the continuous vulnerability of children who are used as tools for begging and the systemic issues that allow such practices to persist in society.
