An affordable computer from Apple – one aspect was severely sacrificed
Apple has announced its new laptop, the MacBook Neo, designed for budget-conscious consumers with a starting price of €699 in Finland.
Apple introduced the MacBook Neo, a new laptop model priced affordably for first-time buyers, particularly targeting students and young users. The starting price in Finland is set at €699, significantly lower than the MacBook Air, which starts at €1,139 for students. In addition, students and qualified individuals in the education sector can acquire the Neo at just €599, making it a competitive option for budget-seeking consumers.
However, the Neo sacrifices several features compared to its more expensive counterparts. Instead of the powerful M-series processor, it is equipped with the A18 Pro mobile chip, which reflects a deliberate choice to maintain a lower price point while compromising on performance. Other cutbacks include a limited color range for the display, the absence of keyboard backlighting, fewer connectivity options, and a basic camera.
One of the most critical reductions is the memory capacity, set at just 8 gigabytes, which is considered minimal in 2026 reviews. This limitation is likely due to the rising costs of memory chips, and although a larger memory option would enhance performance, it would also significantly raise the laptop's price. Overall, the MacBook Neo is aimed at making Apple's offerings more accessible while highlighting the trade-offs involved in achieving this price point.
