Speculations spread – Ott Tänak's direct response: "I am not"
Estonian driver Ott Tänak clarified that he is not coaching fellow rally driver Takamoto Katsuta, despite recent speculations about their growing communication during the WRC season.
Ott Tänak, who withdrew from the World Rally Championship (WRC) series at the end of last season, has addressed recent speculations regarding his involvement with fellow driver Takamoto Katsuta. Following the recent Swedish leg of the WRC, it was revealed that Tänak has been providing informal assistance to the 32-year-old Japanese driver. Katsuta himself acknowledged the collaboration, indicating that he frequently discusses strategies and questions with Tänak during rallies.
Despite the rumors suggesting a coach-player relationship, Tänak firmly stated, "I am not his coach. I am just a friend." He elaborated on the nature of their communication, explaining that his role leans more toward being a listener rather than an instructor. Tänak noted that often when he allows someone to express their thoughts, they can discern the answers themselves, emphasizing a supportive friendship rather than a formal coaching dynamic.
Tänak, who clinched the WRC drivers' title with Toyota in 2019, has maintained a strong connection to the sport, as evident from his continued interaction with emerging talent like Katsuta. The clarification serves to dismiss any misconceptions about his role, while reinforcing the significance of mentorship and camaraderie within the racing community.
