Energy Transition in the Freising District: Start of the Citizen Solar Park in Eching
Construction has begun on the Citizen Solar Park in Eching, which will be the largest photovoltaic installation in the Freising district upon completion.
Construction has officially commenced on the Eching-Ost Citizen Solar Park, which is slated to become operational by September 2026. With a capacity of 23.9 megawatt-peak, this photovoltaic facility will not only be the largest in the Freising district but also the second-largest power plant in the region, following the gas power plant in Anglberg, Zolling. Local officials, including Eching's Mayor Sebastian Thaler, have expressed optimism about the project's potential to provide clean energy to all households in Eching.
Mayor Thaler has emphasized that the park's capacity of 24 MWp will suffice to supply all private households in Eching with sustainable electricity, highlighting the project as a prime example of successful collaboration among stakeholders like the BΓΌrger-Energie-Genossenschaft Freisinger Land (BEG-FS), the district, and the municipality. This cooperation is seen as a vital element in achieving regional energy goals, which align with broader objectives of Germany's energy transition, or 'Energiewende,' promoting renewable energy resources.
Notably, the project features substantial citizen investment, with 349 members of the BEG-FS, including 153 residents from Eching, contributing 2.35 million euros toward its development alongside an additional 7.1 million euros from GLS bank. This initiative showcases how community involvement can significantly impact the transition to renewable energy, enhancing local economies and fostering a sense of ownership among residents in their energy futures.
