Energy Transition: District of Dachau Could Produce More Solar Power
The Dachau district's environmental and traffic committee is exploring potential photovoltaic projects on public land and buildings to increase solar energy production.
In October 2023, the Environmental and Transport Committee of the Dachau district council tasked the administration with proposing possible photovoltaic projects on publicly owned lands and buildings. At a recent meeting, results were presented, revealing that the construction department had identified several additional properties where solar panels could be installed. However, despite suggestions for a solar park at the former landfill site in Frauenhofen, this project will not proceed until the upcoming landfill remediation has been completed.
The overall assessment of potential sites was conducted by an external consulting firm, PEG Planning Office for Energy and Building Technology, in close cooperation with the district construction office. They evaluated aspects such as technical suitability, potential self-consumption rates, economic viability, and the possibility of leasing roof areas to third parties. One of the proposed suitable locations identified by PEG is the roof of a district-owned building, indicating a proactive approach towards leveraging existing infrastructure for renewable energy production.
This initiative aligns with broader efforts in Germany to accelerate the transition to renewable energy (Energiewende) as part of its commitment to sustainability and climate protection. By focusing on local resources, the Dachau district aims to enhance its solar energy production capacity while promoting innovative energy solutions. It reflects a growing recognition of the need for municipalities to actively participate in the energy transition, not only for environmental benefits but also for potential economic advantages.
