"Stop the Attacks, Start a Dialogue": Demonstration in Sapporo Calls for Immediate Ceasefire amid US-Israel Attacks on Iran

A demonstration in Sapporo, Japan, demands an immediate ceasefire in response to the ongoing US and Israeli attacks on Iran.

On January 5th, a demonstration took place in the city center of Sapporo, Japan, demanding an immediate ceasefire in light of the ongoing attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel. Organized by the Hokkaido Constitutional Joint Center, approximately 60 civilians gathered to voice their concerns over the military actions against Iran. These attacks, which commenced on February 28, involved significant military strikes that resulted in the killings of Iranian leaders, escalating conflict in the region as Iran retaliated and the hostilities began to involve neighboring countries.

During the demonstration, lawyer and co-representative of the center, Saito Ko, emphasized the importance of respecting international law, stating that foreign intervention in domestic matters should not be permitted. He raised alarm over the implications of allowing powerful nations to bypass international law for their own convenience, highlighting the risk that it could lead to a world where leaders from countries deemed unfavorable by the US could be targeted for assassination, fundamentally undermining global stability and legal frameworks.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi refrained from directly commenting on whether the military attacks constituted a violation of international law. Meanwhile, Takashi Yamaguchi, co-representative of the citizen group "No War Citizens' Wind - Hokkaido," argued that Japan should take a leading role in advocating for non-violent solutions globally, emphasizing the nation's moral obligation to promote peace rather than military solutions in ongoing international conflicts.
