South Korea will invest up to US$35 billion in one of the largest AI data centers in the world
South Korea plans to build a massive AI data center in Jeollanam-do with an estimated investment of up to US$35 billion, aiming for annual revenues of US$3.5 billion by 2028.
South Korea is set to construct a significant AI data center in Jeollanam-do, projected to become operational around 2028. This ambitious infrastructure project aims to generate approximately US$3.5 billion in its early operational stages. As one of the largest global nodes for artificial intelligence processing, the facility will not only serve domestic needs but will also position South Korea as a leader in AI capabilities on the international stage.
The investment in this data center could reach US$35 billion, which underscores the countryβs commitment to integrating renewable energy sources and advanced cooling systems to accommodate the massive energy demands of modern AI models. To support such infrastructure, high-speed fiber optic networks will be a crucial element, further enhancing the center's capability to handle extensive data processing tasks efficiently.
With a proposed capacity of 3 gigawatts (GW), this data center will surpass most existing facilities, comparable to the power output of three standard nuclear reactors. The project, developed by Fir Hills in collaboration with various authorities, reflects South Korea's strategic vision for harnessing artificial intelligence technology, encouraging economic growth, and enhancing its global competitiveness in the tech sector.
