Do we have new 'golden toilets'? €20,000 for a handrail, €26,300 for repairing a merry-go-round and benches

The Zagreb City Council is reportedly planning extravagant spending on municipal activities, prompting concerns from an independent architect over inflated costs.

The City Council of Zagreb's Lower Town has modified its municipal activities plan for 2026, which outlines a spending budget of €987,000. This budget mainly focuses on improvements to parks, playgrounds, and the replacement of benches. However, independent councilor and architect Miljenko Bernfest has raised alarms about what he terms as inflated costs associated with certain projects. He points out that some expenses, such as €20,000 for the installation of a handrail, appear excessively high, leading him to cast the sole dissenting vote against the plan.
