MPPA recommends correction of overlapping areas of Flota Paru in Prainha, Pará

The Promotoria de Justiça Agrária in Brazil has recommended corrections to the overlapping areas of Flota Paru affecting local communities in Prainha, Pará.

The Promotoria de Justiça Agrária da 2ª Região, based in Santarém in the west of Pará, has issued Recommendation No. 01/2026 addressing significant land inconsistencies concerning the Floresta Estadual do Paru (Flota Paru II) and its overlap with lands occupied by local communities including Água Fria, Mutum, and Lamparina. This action was prompted by an in-depth legal and technical analysis that revealed discrepancies in the conservation unit's boundaries. The recommendation targets the Ideflor-Bio and Iterpa to take corrective measures following these findings.

According to the Agrarian Public Prosecutor's Office, the state decree that established Flota Paru did not specifically include the municipality of Prainha within the conservation unit's boundaries. However, the descriptive memorial that accompanied the decree inadvertently encompassed approximately 85,000 hectares in Prainha that were not included in the original delimitation. This has raised concerns regarding the rights and livelihoods of traditional families residing in those areas, highlighting the necessity for all stakeholders to address the discrepancies promptly.

The implications of this recommendation are significant for the affected communities as it seeks to rectify an oversight that may jeopardize their access to land that they have traditionally occupied. It emphasizes the necessity for careful consideration of environmental conservation efforts alongside the rights of local populations, ensuring that the establishment of conservation areas does not infringe on the existence and wellbeing of indigenous and traditional communities in the region.
