4.9 million overnight stays in Helsinki last year - a record high
Last year, Helsinki recorded over 4.9 million overnight stays, marking a new all-time high for the city.
Helsinki has become an increasingly attractive destination for travelers, with the city recording over 4.9 million overnight stays last year, representing an increase of over eight percent compared to the previous year. According to Statistics Finland, this figure marks a record high for the city, highlighting its growing prominence in the tourism sector. In contrast, overnight stays outside of Helsinki saw only a modest increase of 0.4 percent, underscoring the capital's unique appeal to visitors.
A significant contributor to this growth has been the rise in international tourists, which increased by more than 17 percent. Notably, Helsinki accounted for over a third of all overnight stays by international tourists in Finland, with peak months seeing this figure exceed half. The city welcomed visitors particularly from the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Sweden, while Japan and Italy saw the most significant percentage growth in their number of tourists visiting Helsinki.
According to Nina Vesterinen, Helsinki's tourism director, investments in international leisure travel, public and professional events, as well as improvements in service quality and sustainability, have played crucial roles in attracting visitors. As travelers express satisfaction with their experiences, Helsinki looks to build on this momentum to maintain and enhance its status as a leading tourist destination in Finland and beyond.
