The CEO of Skavsta Airport: 'Our goal is to regain flights to Finland'

Brett Weihart, the CEO of Skavsta Airport, is working to restore flights to Helsinki after a significant decline in traffic due to the pandemic and airline route changes.

Skavsta Airport, which once boasted a vibrant flight schedule with over 40 destinations across Europe in 2019, has faced a drastic reduction in services post-pandemic, now offering only seven routes. The massive shift began when Ryanair relocated its base to Arlanda, followed by Wizz Air reducing its presence at Skavsta. This downturn has left the airport's management aiming for a revival in traffic by attracting airlines back to the site.

One of the primary targets for renewal is the much-desired route to Helsinki. Brett Weihart, the CEO of Skavsta Airport, has actively engaged with Finnair to explore the possibility of reinstating flights on this route. Weihart hopes that discussions could lead to the resumption of the Helsinki route as soon as next year, which would significantly enhance connectivity and offer travelers more options. However, Finnair's sales chief has indicated that currently, the airline does not have plans for adding the Skavsta-Helsinki route, prioritizing their main Stockholm-Helsinki connection instead.

The implications of restoring the route would not only benefit Skavsta Airport by diversifying its flight offerings but also improve regional accessibility for travelers between Sweden and Finland. With airlines slowly recovering from pandemic restrictions, the push for new routes is critical to the long-term health of regional airports like Skavsta, which have faced tough challenges in a competitive and altered aviation landscape.
