War in Iran: 162 Greeks are repatriated

The repatriation of Greeks from the Middle East has begun amid the ongoing war initiated by Israel and the US in Iran.

Gradually, the return of Greek citizens from the Middle East has commenced due to the war declared by Israel and the US against Iran. On March 3 and 4, the first repatriation operations were completed, following directives from the Foreign Minister and coordinated efforts by both the Central and Foreign Services of the ministry. The initial repatriation groups included several citizens from different regions in the Middle East, reflecting the government’s urgent response to ensure the safety of its citizens amidst escalating tensions.

A total of 93 Greek citizens and their family members were repatriated from Oman via a special flight organized by Aegean Airlines, with logistical support from the Greek embassies in Riyadh and Abu Dhabi. Additionally, 42 Greeks from Bethlehem were escorted by the General Consul in Jerusalem to Egypt, demonstrating the proactive measures taken to facilitate safe passage for citizens from conflict areas. Furthermore, a group of 27 young members from the basketball association ARIS in Thessaloniki were relocated from the UAE to Istanbul and subsequently to Thessaloniki, evidencing the comprehensive effort by Greek diplomatic authorities to support their nationals abroad.

This repatriation comes at a critical time when geopolitical tensions are rising, marking the importance of swift action by the Greek government. As the situation in Iran escalates, the potential threat to citizens in the region necessitates ongoing monitoring and potential further operations. The government's commitment to the safety of Greek citizens abroad will likely strengthen public trust and highlight effective diplomatic engagement during crises.
