Repatriation of Greeks from the Middle East: The first operations by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have been completed
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs completed initial repatriation efforts for Greek citizens and their families from the Middle East amidst escalating regional conflict.
On March 3 and 4, 2026, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs successfully concluded its first operations for the repatriation of Greek citizens and their families from the Middle East due to the ongoing military crisis in that region. Under the orders of the foreign minister, these missions were coordinated by both central and external offices of the ministry, reflecting an urgent response to the deteriorating security situation affecting its citizens abroad.
The repatriation efforts brought back a total of 162 individuals, including 93 Greek nationals from Oman, who were returned on a special flight arranged by Aegean Airlines, with logistical support from the Greek embassies in Riyadh and Abu Dhabi. Additionally, 42 Greek citizens were repatriated from Bethlehem, traveling by road to Egypt under the guidance of the Greek Consul General in Jerusalem. Furthermore, a youth group from Aris Thessaloniki, consisting of 27 members, was also facilitated to return from the United Arab Emirates to Istanbul and subsequently travel by land to Thessaloniki with the assistance of the Greek Consulate General there.
The implications of these operations extend beyond mere logistics; they emphasize Greece's commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens amid crisis situations abroad. As conflicts escalate in the Middle East, these proactive measures by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs serve not only to safeguard Greek nationals but also reflect on the broader diplomatic strategies employed by Greece in maintaining its citizen security and fostering international relations, particularly in times of instability.
