Police investigate night fires in Širvintos and Kaunas districts: cars, a racing buggy, and jet skis burned

Police are investigating suspected arson after a series of nighttime fires that destroyed vehicles in Širvintos and Kaunas districts of Lithuania.

On March 5, at around 12:10 AM, a fire broke out in a VW Touran car in Klišabalė village, Širvintos district. The vehicle was completely destroyed, raising suspicions of arson. The authorities are currently estimating the damages, and evidence related to property destruction is being gathered. Following this incident, at approximately 2 AM, another fire occurred in a warehouse in Vilemų village, Kaunas district, where a racing buggy, an unused VW Beetle, two jet skis, and other items were also lost to the flames.

The police department announced that preliminary investigations have started regarding the destruction of property in a manner that poses a general danger to the community. According to the penal code, individuals who destroy or damage someone else’s property may face community service, fines, or imprisonment for up to two years. However, if the destruction is deemed to have posed a threat to human life, the penalties can be much harsher, including fines, restrictions on freedom, arrest, or imprisonment.

As the investigations continue, police are working to identify the owners of the destroyed properties and determine the total damages incurred. This incident reflects growing concerns about public safety in rural areas, especially given the potential for reckless acts that may endanger lives and property. Consequently, the local community and law enforcement are urged to remain vigilant against such acts of arson.
