Jeonju City Reviews Temporary Parking Lot Plan to Preserve Toad Breeding Ground

Jeonju City is reconsidering its plan for a temporary parking lot due to concerns over damage to local amphibian breeding grounds, particularly for toads.

Jeonju City, located in North Jeolla Province, is re-evaluating its plan to create a temporary parking lot near Ajung Lake after environmental concerns were raised about the impact on toad and other amphibian breeding habitats. The proposal was initially aimed at addressing a parking shortage at the Ajung Lake Library, but objections surfaced when it was revealed that the location is a crucial breeding ground for species like the Asian toad and the Korean frog.

The Jeolla Province Environmental Movement Coalition has advocated for complete withdrawal of the parking lot proposal, stating that filling the wetland where the amphibians breed would severely disrupt their habitats. There have been alarming reports of 'roadkill' incidents involving toads and frogs as they migrate from their mountainous habitats to the wetlands, with approximately 500 animals reportedly killed this year alone due to a lack of protective fences that were not installed in time due to climate change accelerating their breeding period.

In response to these concerns, Jeonju City's Mayor Woo Beom-ki visited the site to assess the situation and ordered a comprehensive review of the plan. The city intends to collaborate with environmental organizations and relevant authorities to devise strategies to mitigate roadkill and protect the ecosystem while also exploring ecological tourism initiatives that would promote both conservation and citizen relaxation, striking a balance between urban development and natural preservation.
