Customs to auction 14,375 litres of smuggled PMS
The Nigeria Customs Service plans to auction 14,375 litres of petrol seized from smugglers attempting to export to Cameroon.
The Nigeria Customs Service has announced a public auction for 14,375 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) that was seized from smugglers en route to Cameroon. The seizure was part of a substantial anti-smuggling operation named Operation Whirlwind, conducted by the Special Anti-Smuggling Taskforce in Calabar, Nigeria. The operation successfully dismantled a network involved in the illegal exportation of PMS, leading to the interception of 235 jerry-cans and 40 drums containing the petroleum product.
DCC Abubakar Aliyu, the National Coordinator of the task force for Zone C, highlighted the importance of the operation, stating that it was based on actionable intelligence that guided their enforcement actions. The total Duty Paid Value (DPV) for the seized petrol has been estimated at N14,375,000, reflecting not only the value of the product but also the ongoing challenges faced by the Nigeria Customs Service in combating smuggling activities. This auction represents both a financial recovery for the state and a deterrent against illicit activities.
The illegal exportation of PMS to neighboring countries like Cameroon has been a persistent issue in the region, significantly affecting local fuel availability and pricing. By auctioning the confiscated fuel, the Nigeria Customs Service aims to uphold the law while also addressing the economic implications of such smuggling. This move could signify a strengthened commitment to regulate fuel distribution and combat illegal trade across borders, potentially restoring some balance to the local fuel market.
