Owo church attack: How I was arrested – Suspect
A suspect in the Owo church attack detailed his arrest and the ongoing trial during court proceedings in Abuja.
During a court session in Abuja, a suspect accused of participating in the June 5, 2022, attack on the St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, shared an account of his arrest by the Department of State Services (DSS). The suspect, Omeiza, testified in the Ebira language, which was translated into English for the court. His defense lawyer, Abdullahi Muhammad, led the proceedings as the suspect provided insights into his involvement and arrest, which are pivotal to his case.
The attack on the St. Francis Catholic Church resulted in the tragic deaths of 41 worshippers and injured over 140 others, highlighting the severity of the incident and the national concern over security issues in Nigeria. The ongoing trial, which began on August 1, 2025, sees the DSS presenting a total of 11 witnesses to substantiate their claims against the suspects. The court has approved the confessional statements made by the accused after determining they were given voluntarily during a preliminary hearing.
This case underscores the ongoing challenges Nigeria faces regarding terrorism and security, as the public and government alike grapple with finding effective means to prevent such attacks in the future. With the DSS's efforts to hold individuals accountable, this trial could set significant legal precedents concerning terrorism-related offenses in Nigeria.
