Weight loss medicine can prevent substance abuse

Popular weight loss medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro may help individuals avoid addiction to alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, according to a new study.

A new study has revealed that well-known weight loss medications, Ozempic and Mounjaro, could play a significant role in helping individuals steer clear of addiction to substances such as alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs. This research analyzed the health records of over 600,000 American veterans diagnosed with type 2 diabetes over a period of three years. The findings indicate that treatments incorporating GLP-1 medications showed an 18% reduction in the risk of developing alcohol-related disorders when compared to other diabetes medications. Notably, these medications also diminished the likelihood of cannabis dependence by 14%, cocaine addiction by 20%, nicotine dependence by 20%, and opioid addiction by 25%.

Moreover, for individuals already grappling with substance use disorders, GLP-1 medications were found to be particularly beneficial, lowering the risk of overdose by 39% and the risk of death due to substance-related issues by 50%. Ziyad Al-Aly, the lead researcher, expressed surprise at the broad effectiveness of these medications across various substance dependencies, noting that this multifaceted impact is rare in addiction medicine, where typically no single drug effectively addresses all types of substance abuse. The researchers hypothesize that the mechanisms at play might involve modifications in the brain's reward system, helping to curb cravings for not just food but also these addictive substances.
