UNAM Theatre Presents: 'The Glass Menagerie,' Directed by David Olguín
The UNAM Theatre is staging 'The Glass Menagerie,' directed by David Olguín, offering a modern interpretation of this classic play.
The UNAM Theatre is currently presenting a production of 'The Glass Menagerie,' a classic play by Tennessee Williams, directed by David Olguín. The play, which debuted in 1944, initially struggled to find success after its Chicago premiere but was ultimately saved by the extraordinary performance of actress Laurette Taylor, who embodied the character of Amanda Wingfield. Inspired by Williams' memories of his own mother, the play has since gained immense recognition as a crucial piece of 20th-century drama.
The UNAM Theatre is known for revitalizing classic works for contemporary audiences, particularly for young university students. This latest production is set within the Theatre Juan Ruiz de Alarcón at the Centro Cultural Universitario and runs from Thursday to Saturday at 7 PM and Sundays at 6 PM, until April 24. The staging aims to resonate with today’s youth while offering them a glimpse into a significant moment in theatrical history, demonstrating the timelessness of Williams' work.
Following its successful initial run in 2025, the production reflects on themes such as family dynamics, aspiration, and the effects of disability, resonating strongly with both historical and current audiences. As students engage with this revitalized classic, they are prompted to reflect on the narratives of struggle and perseverance that echo through the lives of the play’s characters.
