The Modern Art Museum opens 'Modern Tales' featuring key works from the Gelman Collection
The Modern Art Museum in Mexico City has opened a new exhibition showcasing significant pieces from the Gelman Collection, emphasized by the collaboration with the Zambrano family.
The Modern Art Museum in Mexico City inaugurated its latest exhibition titled 'Modern Tales,' showcasing important artworks from the Gelman Collection. This collection, comprising around 200 pieces, originates from private collectors, specifically the Zambrano family of Monterrey. During the event, Alejandra de la Paz, the director of the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (Inbal), emphasized the importance of the collection as a cultural heritage belonging to Mexicans, in contrast to foreign ownership.
De la Paz also clarified the role of the Santander Foundation in the management of the collection, stating that the foundation would facilitate the logistics involved in touring the artworks, such as handling documentation, packaging, and travel arrangements. Importantly, she noted that Santander is not the owner of the Gelman Collection but rather a partner in its exhibition and dissemination efforts. This partnership aims to ensure that the artworks reach audiences globally, thereby enhancing the visibility of Mexican artistic heritage.
The exhibition reflects a broader commitment to promote and preserve Mexican art, as it creates opportunities for local artists and curators to engage with vital works that shape national identity. By opening lines of communication between the Gelman Collection and international audiences, the museum not only showcases remarkable pieces of art but also reinforces the narrative that contemporary Mexican art is significant on the world stage.
