Lee Seong-gwon: If elections are held tomorrow, we would face a defeat similar to that of 2018... we must exclude party officials who sympathize with the Yoon Again faction
Lee Seong-gwon warns that holding elections tomorrow could lead to catastrophic results for the party akin to the 2018 local elections.
Lee Seong-gwon, a member of the People Power Party in South Korea, expressed grave concerns about the upcoming local elections, suggesting that if voting were to occur immediately, the results could mirror the devastating defeat of the party in the 2018 local elections. He criticized the party leadership, specifically referencing the recent creation of a task force to investigate alleged electoral fraud, arguing that it could further alienate conservative supporters, dissuading them from voting altogether.
During an interview held in a meeting room at the National Assembly in Yeouido, he conveyed the dismal outlook of the partyβs prospects and the impression that the Yoon Again faction could be perceived as a dominant influence within the party. He noted that many constituents are already expressing their reluctance to vote, with some stating their disappointment in the party's inability to sever ties with the faction, further risking moderate voters drifting towards the opposition Democratic Party. This internal division within the party could have dire consequences, as he highlighted research indicating a potential for the party to lose significantly in the elections.
Lee called for the party's leadership to decisively distance itself from the Yoon Again faction and to demonstrate this commitment through actionable reforms. By failing to do so, he warned, the party risks repeating past mistakes and potentially delivering another catastrophic electoral outcome. This sentiment reflects a broader concern within the party regarding unity and strategy as the elections approach, positioning internal party dynamics at the forefront of electoral success or failure.
