State recognizes emergency in Corguinho and Ivinhema after heavy rains

The state of Brazil has declared an emergency in the municipalities of Corguinho and Ivinhema following significant rainfall that caused widespread flooding and damage.

Heavy rainfall in Corguinho, which began on February 2, resulted in 238 millimeters of rain, leading to rivers and streams reaching emergency levels. The flooding caused significant damage to urban and rural infrastructure, affecting roads, bridges, and private and public properties. The emergency recognition came after a favorable opinion from the State Coordination of Protection and Civil Defense (CEPDEC/MS), which assessed the dire situation in the region.

Similarly, Ivinhema experienced storm conditions on February 20, impacting both urban and rural areas. The damages exceeded the municipality's capacity for response, leading to road and infrastructure issues, as well as damage to residential properties. Access to rural communities was also severely restricted due to the storms. The state Civil Defense issued a technical opinion that warranted the emergency declaration in Ivinhema.

These emergency declarations are significant as they allow for coordinated state-level assistance aimed at mitigating the impacts of the flood. This recognition facilitates funding and resources for recovery efforts, highlighting the vulnerability of these communities to extreme weather events that have been worsened by climate change. The situation reminds local authorities and residents of the need for preparedness and resilience planning in the face of natural disasters.
