Warning of the Spring Risk Threatening Detached Houses and Summer Cottages – Can Cause Moisture Damage

Finland’s POP Insurance warns that melting snow in spring can cause moisture damage to detached houses and cottages if precautions are not taken.

As spring approaches, the risk of moisture damage to detached houses and summer cottages due to melting snow becomes significant, according to a warning issued by POP Insurance. Rapid snowmelt can lead to water entering the structures of buildings, potentially causing costly moisture damage. Special attention is needed for snow piles around the foundation of homes, as these can direct melting water into the base of the buildings if not managed properly.

POP Insurance advises homeowners to clear snow away from the foundation by several meters to prevent meltwater from impacting the structure. It also highlights the importance of checking drainage systems, particularly if the foundations and bottom structures are at or near ground level. Additionally, homeowners are encouraged to inspect their roofs for potential damage at critical points, such as vents, fasteners, and gutters, especially after snow and ice have melted sufficiently.

For summer cottages, there are even greater risks as lingering winter conditions may have left water leaks if the main water shutoff was not closed. Regular inspection of these properties is recommended to avoid hazardous conditions. Homeowners and cottage dwellers alike should be proactive in taking these measures to safeguard their properties against moisture damage that could escalate during the spring thaw.
