Residents of apartment buildings may face an unexpected threat during thawing: Who should take care of this?
Apartment residents in Lithuania are warned about the risks associated with heavy snow load on flat roofs due to the thawing weather.
As thawing conditions develop in Lithuania, the weight of melted snow is increasing the risks associated with flat roofs. According to Tadas Kuznecovas, head of the region at Civinity, while they are actively monitoring the situation and visiting managed buildings, they emphasize the importance of residents being vigilant. Heavy snow and ice layers can lead to structural issues, blocked drainage systems, and the potential for leaks or roof collapse.
The situation becomes particularly acute for flat roofs, which might not show immediate signs of stress such as sliding snow or ice formations. Instead, snow accumulates over time, and when temperatures rise, it can cause the weight on the structure to approach critical levels. Recent inspections by Civinity’s experts have revealed some roofs with snow depths exceeding 40 cm, raising significant concern about the integrity of these buildings under such conditions.
Authorities urge residents to remain observant and report any signs of trouble to ensure their safety. The impact of these weather changes can be rapid, and small issues can escalate quickly into major structural problems if not attended to. Continued awareness and collective responsibility are essential for preventing potential disasters during the melting period.
