Spoke About the Violence for the First Time

Þráinn Bj. Farestveit publicly shared his experiences of violence for the first time during a conference aimed at combating violence.

During a national conference on combating violence in Iceland, Þráinn Bj. Farestveit shared his personal account of experiencing sexual violence in his childhood for the first time. Farestveit, who is the director of the Prison Support Association and the vice-chairman of Sáá, emphasized the importance of supporting children facing difficulties. He recounted a contrast between his background of a nurturing family life and the trauma inflicted by women in his environment.

Reflecting on his experiences, Farestveit highlighted the role of supportive older peers who initially helped him cope with the challenges he faced. However, he soon found himself facing another form of violence that left him severely injured and hospitalized. This shift in his life led him to become a different person, prompting questions from others about the significant changes they observed in him.

Farestveit's revelation is not just a personal story but also a call to acknowledge and address the issues of violence in various forms within society. His brave step in sharing this story publicly is indicative of a broader effort to break the silence surrounding such issues and to encourage open discussions about the support needed for victims, particularly children, to heal and overcome their traumas.
