AS supports mandatory registration of prepaid SIM card users
The opposition party AS supports the mandatory registration of prepaid SIM card users to combat fraud.
The opposition party "Apvienotā saraksta" (AS) in Latvia has expressed its support for mandatory registration of users of prepaid SIM cards. Edgars Tavars, the faction leader, highlighted that the current issue of telephone fraud is largely exacerbated by the use of unregistered SIM cards. He noted that requiring users to register their phone numbers could significantly reduce the incidence of fraud, particularly in cases involving local numbers that instill more trust among potential victims.
Tavars pointed out that while calls from foreign numbers tend to raise suspicion, calls from local numbers are perceived as more trustworthy. This perception gives fraudsters a tactical advantage, enabling them to communicate in a familiar language and even utilize technology, such as artificial intelligence, to mimic voices or create convincing narratives. He cited that many individuals continue to fall victim to such scams, emphasizing the urgent need for preventive measures.
Moreover, Tavars reassured that the process of mandatory registration would not pose insurmountable difficulties for senior citizens, provided that the transition is conducted in a clear and supportive manner. The proposed measure stands to not only enhance the safety of consumers but also bolster the ongoing efforts to mitigate the pervasive problem of telecommunication fraud in Latvia.
