The Ministry of Internal Affairs proposes mandatory registration of prepaid SIM card users starting from October
The Latvian Ministry of Internal Affairs suggests that the government implement a mandatory user registration for prepaid SIM cards beginning October 1st, 2023.
The Latvian Ministry of Internal Affairs (IeM) has proposed that the government enact mandatory registration for users of prepaid SIM cards, with a suggested effective date of October 1, 2023. This initiative aims to enhance security and control, allowing authorities to better manage the use of mobile communications within the country. The proposed amendments to the Electronic Communications Law will also include exemptions for contracts that are concluded before this deadline.
The proposed legislation will require electronic communication providers to collect identification data from users who engage in prepaid services. Details such as the user's name, surname, date of birth, personal identification number, or the legal entity's name and registration number will be mandatory for all contracts moving forward. This move is expected to streamline the process of keeping track of mobile users and possibly reduce instances of misuse of prepaid services.
The IeM has highlighted the importance of these changes in improving national security and enhancing the ability to respond to criminal activities that may utilize anonymous phone services. By implementing these registration requirements, Latvia aims to align its practices with other EU member states that have adopted similar regulations to safeguard against misuse of prepaid SIM cards in criminal enterprises.
