Population forecast predicts a decline in the majority of Southwest Finland – Oripää still believes in the future

A new demographic forecast suggests that many small municipalities in Southwest Finland, particularly Oripää, will experience significant population decline over the next fifteen years, while urban areas like Turku will continue to grow.

The Finnish Association of Municipalities has released a population forecast indicating that most small towns in Southwest Finland are expected to see a decrease in population due to migration towards urban centers. In the coming fifteen years, it is anticipated that only 11 out of the 27 municipalities in the Varsinais-Suomi region will experience growth, with the majority of that growth concentrated in urban areas like Turku, Kaarina, and Rusko. On the other hand, smaller rural towns are projected to lose a significant portion of their populations, with Oripää expected to experience the largest decline of over 16%, followed by Marttila with nearly a 13% reduction.
