New demographic forecast offers much smaller growth for Tallinn

A new demographic forecast indicates that Tallinn's population is expected to grow by only 22,000 by mid-century, significantly less than previous estimates of 90,000 growth by 2050.

A recently released demographic forecast for Tallinn has revealed a much lower expected population growth than earlier predictions made three years ago. While the former projection estimated an increase of around 90,000 residents by 2050, the new forecast by the Migration and Urban Studies Centre of the University of Tartu suggests that the capital's population will increase by only 22,000 by the middle of the century.

This new study highlights that the anticipated growth in Tallinn's population will be primarily driven by migration. According to the latest projections, the city is expected to see an annual population increase of approximately 620 residents until 2035, and after that, about 1,070 residents per year. By 2035, this would suggest a total increase of around 6,200 inhabitants, a stark contrast to earlier expectations.

The revised outlook reflects changing demographics and migration patterns impacting the capital. It also raises questions about urban planning and resource allocation in Tallinn, as projections for more modest growth will demand different strategies than those needed for the previously expected substantial increase in population.
