Footage received by TV Bahia highlights the overflowing Ipitanga Creek, a tributary of the ParaguaΓ§u River, which has resulted in completely submerged streets in the city center. Local businesses were also inundated, creating a dire situation for merchants and residents alike.
Residents reported a rapid rise in the creek's water level, causing concern among families living near the banks. Eliana Gonzaga, the cityβs mayor, communicated to TV Bahia that approximately 80 families have been affected by the rain this morning; however, there is currently no precise information regarding the number of individuals displaced or evacuated. The municipal Civil Defense is in the process of assessing the situation and the extent of damages caused by the deluge.
According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), the forecast indicates continued rain with thunderstorms throughout Wednesday, persisting into Thursday. This weather pattern raises further concerns about additional flooding and its implications for the safety and stability of the affected communities in Cachoeira, revealing the ongoing vulnerability to severe weather events in the region.
