Surprise for Kaunas hospital staff: they claim they received lower wages without any warning or notice
Staff at the LSMU Kaunas Hospital experienced a shock when they received unexpectedly lower wages, leading to a union response and a meeting held to address the issue.
On February 20, a meeting was convened between the staff of LSMU Kaunas Hospital and its management after employees discovered they had received lower salaries than usual. Many employees reported reductions of their wages by amounts ranging from 100 euros to more dramatic cuts of up to 1000 euros for doctors. This sudden change sparked confusion and outrage among the staff, particularly as it was implemented without prior notice, breaking standard contractual practices that typically prevent such changes without employee consent.
Kęstutis Juknis, the chairman of the 'Sandrauga' professional union, expressed the sentiments of the staff, detailing the shock and anger circulating amongst the workers. The arbitrary reduction of salaries, particularly in a public institution where such decisions should adhere to stricter regulations, raised significant concerns among employees. The union emphasized their fight against this unjust practice, mobilizing support from the workforce to address the problem and seek explanations from the management.
Juknis suggested that these actions might be a part of management's alternative strategy in response to previous resistance to other management plans. This situation highlights underlying tensions within the hospital's administrative practices and raises questions about employee rights and the governance of public institutions in Lithuania. The incident could potentially lead to greater scrutiny of how hospitals manage their finances and the treatment of their staff, bringing visibility to labor practices in the healthcare sector.
