Good news for minimum wage earners: a further increase is promised

The Lithuanian Government is planning to increase the minimum wage to address the rising cost of living and support wage growth amid concerns from the business sector.

According to the Social Security Service ('Sodra'), the average employee salary in Lithuania increased by 7.6% in the last quarter of 2025, reaching €1,514 net and €2,480 gross. However, with rising prices, this increase is viewed as insufficient. Government spokesperson I. Ruginienė emphasized the need for further hikes in the minimum wage as a tool to influence broader wage growth and combat the financial strain on residents during harsh winter conditions.

Despite a positive trend in wage growth, Ruginienė acknowledged the concerns raised by the business community regarding the increasing minimum wage. She argued that raising the minimum wage is essential as it drives up salaries at all levels, stimulating the economy and helping residents cope with rising living costs. The government stands firm on its commitment to ensure that the minimum wage will continue to rise, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on workers and families.

This commitment from the Lithuanian government comes during a challenging economic period marked by high inflation and increased costs of living. Strengthening the minimum wage not only aims to support workers but also reflects a broader economic strategy to ensure fair compensation in light of the economic difficulties facing many households. Policymakers are balancing these increases with the concerns of businesses, who warn that further wage hikes could strain their operations.
