Presidential Advisor: Lithuania is Prepared for Possible Influx of Migrants from the Middle East
Lithuania's presidential advisor expressed the country's readiness to handle a potential influx of migrants due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
In a recent statement, D. Matulionis, an advisor to Lithuania's president, addressed concerns regarding a possible surge in migrants from the Middle East as conflicts continue in the region. He indicated that while there are current trends indicating such a possibility, the situation remains theoretical at this stage. He affirmed Lithuania's preparedness to manage this potential challenge and emphasized the importance of controlling illegal immigration that could arise under these circumstances.
Matulionis pointed out that ongoing military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran may complicate the refugee situation further, leading to fears among various European Union politicians about a potential refugee crisis. This echoes historical concerns, as the EU faced a significant migration crisis in 2015 stemming from the Syrian civil war. The advisor noted that while it is too early to draw definitive conclusions about the impact of these potential migrant flows, Lithuania is positioned to respond effectively should the situation escalate.
The advisor reassured that any increase in migration should not be utilized as a strategy by unfriendly states to undermine Lithuania or other EU nations. As Lithuania continues to monitor the developments in the Middle East closely, the government remains committed to ensuring that illegal migration is curtailed, thereby safeguarding its national interests and social cohesion amidst potential external pressures.
