Nurse sentenced to prison for thefts at hospital
A nurse has been sentenced to two years in prison for stealing jewelry and valuables from elderly patients at Danderyd Hospital in Sweden.
A nurse, working at Danderyd Hospital, has been sentenced to two years in prison after being convicted for stealing jewelry and valuables from elderly patients. The serious thefts occurred during the patients' stays at the emergency department in three separate incidents in 2020, 2024, and 2025. The court found the nurse guilty of three counts of aggravated theft and also for stealing items from the home of a former partner, for which she received additional charges of gross handling of stolen goods.
The nurse partially admitted her guilt, revealing that her actions were driven by a gambling addiction that prompted her to commit these crimes. Despite her plea for a lighter punishment, the Attunda District Court rejected her request for probation and rehabilitation treatment. The presiding judge, Louise Conradi, noted in a press release that the two-year prison sentence reflects the ruthlessness and systematic nature of the nurse's criminal activity, emphasizing the breach of trust against vulnerable patients.
This case highlights a significant violation of trust within the healthcare system, where patients, especially the elderly and sick, are typically expected to be in a safe environment. The ruling not only serves to punish the individual involved but also sends a strong message regarding the seriousness of such crimes within a healthcare setting, emphasizing the need for stringent oversight and accountability in sectors that care for vulnerable populations.
