Man and woman raped a primary school-age child in North Savo – Court of Appeals reduced the district court sentence
A man and woman have been sentenced to nine years in prison in Finland for the serious rape of a ten-year-old child, but their sentences were reduced by the Court of Appeals.
The East Finland Court of Appeals has sentenced a man and a woman to nine years in prison for the serious crime of child sexual assault against a ten-year-old. The incidents occurred in North Savo between December 2023 and April 2024, during which the child was sexually assaulted by the pair. The court emphasized that the defendants caused significant psychological harm to the victim, indicating the serious nature of their crimes.
Initially, both defendants were sentenced to ten years of unconditional imprisonment by the North Savo District Court in May 2024, a sentence that was appealed by both parties. In their appeals, one accused sought to have the charge of serious child sexual assault partially dismissed, while the other requested the complete dismissal of charges or alternatively a condition of solicitation. Moreover, both sought reductions in the compensation owed to the victim, demonstrating their attempts to mitigate the repercussions of their crimes in light of the severe psychological impact on the child.
In a surprising move, the Court of Appeals decided to reduce the original sentence handed down by the district court, indicating a more lenient stance on the punishment for such a grave offense. This outcome raises questions about the judicial approach to child sexual abuse cases in Finland and could have implications for future cases and victims seeking justice, particularly regarding the consideration of psychological effects on victims in sentencing.
